We don't yet know how to cure Alzheimer's disease. But drug treatments are now available in Canada (Aricept™, Exelon™, Reminyl™ and Ebixa®) to treat symptoms in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
These drugs help some people function better in daily activities such as bathing and eating, and may improve memory, language and other cognitive abilities.
It is well recognized that the physical and social environment in which a person with Alzheimer's disease lives can influence disease symptoms and quality of life. A supportive environment can help the person manage better on a daily basis and maintain independence. By understanding the disease process, being sensitive to emotions and feelings, and learning to communicate in a variety of ways, caregivers can help improve the quality of life for both the people they are helping and themselves.
