How can you develop a Healthy Brain Image (HBI)?  Remember IMAGE!

  • I love a challenge!
For your brain, a challenge is the equivalent working out your body.  And just like a good work out, your brain needs you to continue to increase the intensity.

You can do something as simple as change the way you usually do a task, such as brushing your hair with your less dominant hand.  You can play games that challenge your mind, like a crossword, or pursue a new interest such as learning a language or learn how to play a musical interest.

  • Mind your stress levels
Stress causes your body to release chemicals that are damaging to the brain, especially if the stress persists over time.

Reduce your stress levels by making time for yourself.  This can mean that there are times when you need to seek support from family and friends: its okay to ask for help!  Get plenty of sleep and laugh a lot.

  • Activate your social life
Your brain loves company!  Getting together with family and friends is a great way to stimulate your brain.  Often, socializing is last on the “to do” list.  But now, when you plan that fishing or shopping trip you can tell everyone you are working on maintaining your Healthy Brain Image!
  • Get your numbers
A healthy lifestyle is as important to your Healthy Brain Image as it is to the rest of your body.  Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity are all risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.  Although you do not want to become obsessed with numbers like your weight, you do want to keep informed about your health.
  • Exercise

Yes, the dreaded “E” word.  Exercise is a great way to keep your body and your brain healthy.  Your brain is an oxygen expensive organ, and exercise is one of the best ways to “feed” our brain the blood and oxygen it needs.  If you have concerns, check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Remember: protect your head, brain injuries are a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.  Wear an approved helmet and drive safely.

Will improving your Healthy Brain Image prevent Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias?  There are no guarantees, but research suggests that it does reduce risk.  A healthy brain can withstand illness better.
